Diesel Generator – Your Maintenance Checklist
Genset or simply known as industrial generator can last for over a decade or more but this can become possible only if it’s properly maintained. And even if the generator has several moving parts, it composes of sensitive parts as well as components that have to be maintained and checked up regularly. There are different schedule dates to which maintenance has to be done.
Say that you’ve got to schedule these measures, then the following are few things that you may do on your diesel generator.
If the diesel generator will be maintained on a day to day basis, then the following is what will be done.
General inspection – here, you have to check any loose parts of the generator, signs for corrosion on parts, accumulation of dust and traces of carbon.
Coolant heater check – be sure that the coolant heater is in place and inspect for any signs of tear and wear on it.
Oil and fuel check – you have to check the oil level and whenever necessary, add oil in it and also, it is important that the fuel level is on the right level for the generator to function optimally.
A maintenance personnel normally does the abovementioned measures but a generator technician can perform this too as part of scheduled service agreement.
Should the diesel generator has to be maintained on a weekly basis, then the following is what must be done.
Air cleaner check – of course, the only way that you can see if there are accumulation of dust and debris on the air cleaner is by checking it in person. If there is, then make sure to give it a thorough cleaning.
Battery charger check – see the float voltage reading on battery charger and whenever necessary, do adjustments on the voltage.
Fuel filter and fuel tank drain – until you see the diesel fuel, keep draining water from the bottom of the machine’s fuel filter housing and fuel tank.
As a matter of fact, there are a lot of facilities that have generator technicians in-house who are tasked in checking the generator every week. Generator maintenance can also be done by a building maintenance personnel given the fact that they have proper training.
In case that the diesel generator is maintained every month, the following is what will be done.
Checking the coolant concentration – take a sample of the coolant by using hydrometer and look at the concentration level by referring to the manufacturer’s service manual.
Drive belt tension check – you’ve got to check the belt if it has proper tension and at the same time, inspect if there are any signs of tear and wear too.
Battery check – check for any corrosion and looseness as well on the starting battery.
